Green Gift Idea — Stop Junk Mail With 41pounds.org!

October 19, 2007

Ferndale, Mich. — 41pounds.org is offering the perfect gift to help one remain true to his or her “Inner-Green”: the gift of a junk-free mailbox. The nonprofit 41pounds.org service stops your loved one’s postal junk mail — and keeps the trees in the forest doing what trees do best, providing oxygen for us to breathe and absorbing carbon to cool the planet. Gift certificates can be purchased and sent online at www.41pounds.org, or by phone.

“At holiday time, what do you give to the person who has everything?” asks 41pounds.org co-founder Sander DeVries. “How about a clutter-free mailbox? No more coupons, sweepstakes offers or credit card promotions. 41pounds.org stops your junk mail and even lets you specify which catalogs you want to keep receiving.”

In addition to reducing household clutter, you are helping the planet:

  • The world’s temperate forests absorb 2 billion tons of carbon annually to help keep the planet cool and healthy.
  • More than 100 million trees are destroyed each year to produce junk mail.
  • Creating and shipping junk mail produces more greenhouse gas emissions than 2.8 million cars.
  • Junk mail wastes 28 billion gallons of water each year.

You will also help to put the “giving” into the gift-giving season. 41pounds.org donates more than 1/3 of the $41 fee to the environmental or community organization you choose. These partners include StopGlobalWarming.org, American Forests, Carbonfund.org, Habitat for Humanity (East Bay), Center for a New American Dream and others.

“We are thrilled to partner with 41pounds.org, which provides a simple way to do something about global warming, while also supporting the work we are doing at StopGlobalWarming.org.” said Laurie David, co-founder of StopGlobalWarming.org. “Less stuff, more charitable giving and more individual action for the planet — that’s what the holidays are about.”

41pounds.org stops household junk mail by contacting dozens of direct mail companies to remove them from marketing lists. This includes almost all credit card applications, coupon mailers and insurance promotions, plus specified catalogs. The name 41pounds.org comes from the amount of junk mail that the average American adult receives every year.

Three brothers — Sander DeVries, Tim Pfannes and Shane Pfannes — started 41pounds.org in 2006 as a community service, in addition to their regular jobs. Since then, the organization has stopped more than 3 million pounds of junk mail and donated more than $50,000 to environmental and community organizations.
